  • Ayurveda, the "Science, or Knowledge of Life", is a 5000 year old medical system originating in India and the first medical system ever recorded, in sutras (songs).  It is a holistic medical system that helps one to know balance in life by considering life's polarities and how the five elements interact.  Ayurveda is an inexpensive medicine system of the people, based on food and plant medicine, offering lifestyle routines and tools that encourage us to practice prevention in our homes rather than responding to crisis.

    You’ll learn:

    • Basic Ayurvedic philosophy

    • An introduction to the Universal Qualities (Gunas), Dhatus (the seven tissues), and the three Doshas (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha).

    • The Ayurvedic view of the dis-ease process (Samprapti), and Pancha Karma (the five cleansings)

    • Body-reading for assessment clues using pulse, tongue, and eye assessment.

  • Introduction to Chinese Herbal Medicine is a brief course that introduces the principles of Chinese Medicine theory and diagnosis. This complex system for understanding function and pathology can be understood through the foundational principles of Yin and Yang, the 5 elements, 12 organ systems, and the vital substances. These principles are not separate from our biological understanding of the body, but instead help to create a unified theory to identify larger patterns that sway our health across body systems.  Diagnostic techniques, including tongue and pulse diagnosis, are discussed.

The second half of the course applies this theoretical approach to herbal medicine.  While the course discusses a few specific Chinese herbs and the construction of traditional herbal formulas, these principles can be applied when using Western herbs. For instance, the functions of the five flavors and the influence of “hot” and “cold” therapeutics are useful to all herbalists.

  • Flower Essences are gentle remedies made from flowering plants and trees' energy or life force. They carry the vibration / energetic imprint of that specific flower (or gems, or the environment). At Green Path Herb School, we do things a little differently. We’ve learned that what truly matters in a program is student engagement, retention, and learning experience.
We believe it’s because we work together through the course materials and have face-to-face time for questions and inspiring conversation every week. We have worked extremely hard to build an exceptional, practical, and valuable course.

What Our Students Think

FAQ

  • This program is for you if:

    • You feel “called” to herbal medicine and medicinal plants

    • You are deeply curious about medicinal plants

    • You would like a job working with herbal medicine

    • You want to begin your journey to becoming an herbal practitioner

    • You want to be a Registered Herbalist with the American Herbalist Guild

    • You want to make or sell herbal products

    • You want to be immersed in a holistic health paradigm

    • You are ready for a deep dive into the world of botanical medicine

    • You want to own your own herbal business

  • Our faculty are chosen based on their different perspectives and expertise in their fields. All teachers are encouraged to present different, but complementary, viewpoints. We consider it a job well done when our students connect the dots and bring together big picture concepts from different classes. We thrive on those "aha moments"!

Our course is designed for those who work, or have other big commitments, such as parents.

Our program is set up to provide a good mix of interaction with all subjects, in particular the herbs themselves. We encourage sensory interaction, such as samples, demos, tasting, slides, student discussion, and medicine making to go far beyond a common lecture.

At Green Path Herb School, we have a "community vibe". We value safety, inclusion, and creating a warm and supportive environment and community for our students and staff.

  • Yes, but because there is no official licensure or certification for herbalists in the United States, we don't "certify" herbalists. All graduates of our Herbalist Certificate Program DO receive a certificate, which is the beautiful proof that you completed and graduated from our program.

The fact that there is no national certification for herbalists in the U.S. has both pros and cons. The thing we like the best about this is that herbalism in the United States is richly diverse. There are many wonderful herb schools in the U.S., and each has offerings that make it unique. The biggest con we see is that anyone can call themselves an herbalist, whatever their level of training (or lack thereof) is. That is why we think it is so important, as an herbalist, to let people know your training and background.

An herbalist's right to practice is protected by their right to free speech under the First Amendment of the United States Constitution. In the U.S., herbalists cannot diagnose or prescribe. Rather, we evaluate people from a holistic perspective and educate our clients and the general public about medicinal plants, natural remedies, healthy eating, and lifestyle pursuits to support overall health and wellness.

If you are interested in a professional designation as an herbalist, check out the American Herbalists Guild, an organization that provides a peer-reviewed Registered Herbalist title. If you are interested in finding out more about how to become a member, you can click here. To find out more about the licensing of herbalists in the U.S., you can read this article from the American Herbalists Guild.

  • Our students benefit greatly from the rich interaction with teachers and other students. We want to get to know you, and we want Green Path to feel like the community that it is.

We also find that students complete courses much faster when there is a specifically scheduled time to meet and work on the program. But we understand that things come up, and sometimes you can't make it to a live class. For this reason, we record each class.

In case you are unable to attend, rest assured that you can watch a class later, without missing any information.

Just email us at facultygp@gmail.com once you have watched the class recording, and we will mark you as having attended the class.

  • Supplies and Materials for the class are as follows:

    • We highly recommend having a computer and good internet access

    • Students will need to print out the supplied Herbal Therapeutics workbook and Herbal Pharmacy workbook

    • Plant Identification Terminology by Harris and Harris (2nd edition)

    • Understanding Anatomy & Physiology book and workbook by Gale Sloan Thompson, current edition

    • A blank journaling book, 8.5 x 11

    • A list of medicine-making supplies will be given at the first Herbal Pharmacy class

    • Gardening and harvesting tools can be helpful for those who want to grow or harvest herbs.

    • Kits: having a sensory experience of an herb is important. That’s why we created three kits for the program: tinctures, bulk herbs, and essential oils. If you will not be in-house regularly, we highly encourage you (though it’s not mandatory) to purchase the kits to deepen your experience with some of the herbs and essential oils we will be studying.

    • All students will receive further details once accepted into the program.

    • We recommend setting aside approximately $200 for books. Generally, other supplies can cost around $300-$500.

  • Yes! Many students value rewatching the videos of our classes. For this reason, everyone will have the option to download all of the class content, handouts, and videos for lifetime access, providing future viewing at their leisure.

  • Herbalist Certificate students can spend 1-3 hours a week on homework, including completing projects, doing research, and studying for quizzes and tests. We encourage students to do what they can, within reason, without becoming overly stressed with the process. There are assignments, but much of the homework is self-determined. As our teacher, Michael Moore, used to say, you get out of it what you put into it.

  • The Herbalist Certificate Program provides an in-depth and intensive learning experience, encompassing over 430 class hours and 70 hours of self-study, projects, assignments, and medicine making. This program features a diverse faculty (including Elaine and John) that covers a comprehensive range of topics in great detail. The Herbalist Certificate Program is designed for those aiming to elevate their herbal skills to transition into professional herbalism. Many students who complete the Herbal Foundations Program choose to progress to the Herbalist Certificate Program.

The Herbal Foundations Program is ideal for beginners, home herbalists, and practitioners looking to expand their herbal knowledge. It is also suitable for individuals who want to support themselves, their family, or friends. The year-long program consists of 72 hours of classes and 36 hours of self-study and medicine-making, held monthly on Saturdays. Herbal Foundations is taught exclusively by Herbalists Elaine Sheff and John Goicovich.

  • Yes! The Herbalist Certificate Program is a hybrid program designed to be attended live and online. People can take part in many classes in-house if they are local, or virtually if they are attending from afar.

  • No, and there is a good reason for this. Accreditation is a form of quality control, ensuring that institutions of higher education, including universities and colleges, satisfy certain standards. Trade schools and herb schools can't be accredited (unless they are part of a college program). Green Path Herb School is, however, a school member of the American Herbalists Guild.
